Elantris is a standalone novel by Brandon Sanderson, in fact his first published book. The City of Gods healed a boyhood injury, and he's never forgotten the gods and goddesses who lived there, whose very skin glowed with power. I read the first book of the Mistborn trilogy (The Final Empire) before going with Elantris. I think she may have suffered from the sheod and just doesn't want to admit it. It takes place in and around the ancient city Elantris which used to be a place of magic and peace, its inhabitants immortal and beautiful.
